That title makes me laugh. It's so cheesy, but appropriate for this quick project.

Our current house definitely has the smallest bedrooms we've ever lived with. They are all pretty much the same size, even the master bedroom; unless you include the master bath as additional square footage. I actually prefer smallish bedrooms because they don't allow to you to furnish the space just to fill the space. You basically have to stick to the essentials and forget about the fluff and it doesn't look odd like it would in a humongo room.

When we moved in, our big tufted headboard just wasn't working for me anymore. It just seemed too large and kinda stuck out like it didn't go with our other bedroom furniture. I've always hoped that the hubby would be willing to replace the dresser and side table, but he's actually attached to it for sentimental reasons. It's not that I don't like it, it's just never been my style. Mission style furniture just isn't my fave. But, at this point we've decided we're holding on to it until...I don't know when, and the tufted headboard; it just had to go.

Enter The Lettered Cottage. After seeing the amazing transformation Layla did on her PB inspired headboard, I jumped out of my seat and began my Craigslist search for the "perfect" headboard to replace our big ol' one.

My "perfect" headboard was not initially so perfect on purpose. Here were my criteria: cheap, similar shape as the PB version, needed the round finials (I don't know why this stood out for me), and cheap. After a few days of searching I found one for $20. Score! It was brass, had almost the exact same shape as the PB one, and it had the round finials. Although when I got it, one of the finials was broken. That ended up being a bit of an ordeal to fix, but that's not important.

Since my headboard was not already painted like Layla's and I believe mine had a smoother texture, I decided to first prime the headboard using a tinted grey spray paint primer and then painted over with the oil-rubbed bronze. Three days, two cans of primer, and one of the oil-rubbed bronze and I was done! Yippee!

Thanks to The Lettered Cottage for the inspiration. I saved a bajillion dollars (actually, more like a $1000). It actually ended up being "free" since I paid for the brass headboard and materials with cash I got from selling the old headboard and I had some left over. This made the hubby especially happy.

I don't remember where I read about this, but a while back I somehow stumbled upon the mother lode of free art. It is pages upon pages of amazing, wonderful, unique art! The NY Public Library Digital Gallery is.the.place. for all this fabulous goodness.

I think I've made it quite obvious on this blog that I am very fond of fabric. It's really hard for me to resist a pretty pattern. I see it as art.

Now that I've changed my role and have become a stay-at-home-mommy, I can't as easily go out and buy all the fabric my little heart desires, for there is a budget I have to keep in mind now. Well, I started thinking about how I could change this. Here's how it worked itself out in my head (although, perhaps not as simplified)

fabric love + crafting desire - funds to run loose = start my own etsy shop!

I'm in the process of working on building an inventory of fabric (yay!), selecting a name for the shop (too many options), crafting in my spare time (and not just sewing), and creating a brand for my shop (I'm all about the details). I want to make sure that I have a lot of things sewn and crafts packaged in order to have them on hand because with a baby to care for first and foremost, I don't want to feel overwhelmed. So, I'm taking my time and making sure things come out exactly the way I want before I open shop.

I've been on the hunt for some unique patterns at various price points and I can't wait to get them all in the mail. Some other things I'll be adding to the shop include custom curtains, "party in a box," fabric bunting, cupcake toppers...and random other bits. It'll basically be a rotating hodgepodge of things I like to make.

New house with a yard = new projects galore! There are so many things that I am extremely thankful for right now: becoming a stay-at-home-mommy, seventy degree weather in February, a hubby with a shorter commute...

One of the things on this list is now having a yard and area to do projects in. I love me some good crafty projects! I can whip out my brand-spankin' new power saws (only to be used when the hubby's at home), spray paint my little heart out, sew like it's going out-of-style, and refurbish old furniture. Yay!

One of my first large projects since arriving in our new place was to find a table for our dine-in kitchen area. I now have a real dining room and separate eating area for messy meals. Fancy. Of course I was not about to go out and buy a new table. That's too easy and usually more than I want to spend, so Craigslist searching it was. After a three week search, I finally found a table that I thought was right and not in need of too much work.

In my mind, I envisioned a cute little pedestal table. I am a big fan of round tables. I don't think I've ever owned a rectangular or square table. I found a nice, white, pedestal table from C&B. The ad mentioned it needed to be refinished on top and I was up for the challenge.

I picked it up in the evening because that allows more room in the car since the little one can stay at home with daddy. I saw it, noticed it needed work, and then brought it home. The next morning I realized it was in worse shape than the ad mentioned; bad Craigslisters. Don't lie, please. The previous owners had attempted to paint the top before, but from what I could tell, they had not sanded, primed, or used the correct paint. Oh, and they also didn't paint the leaf it comes with. Bad.

My plan: sand, prime, and paint the top portion of the table using chalkboard paint. The hubby at first questioned the chalkboard paint. He's now convinced. It's a nice contrast to the white parts of the table, it hides some of the deeper gashes I couldn't sand out, and it's super fun.

I ended up doing two coats using a nice angled brush and then three coats using a small foam roller.

Tonight, after waiting over a day for the paint to really dry, the hubby and I tested out the table after dinner.

We love it. We had lots of fun talking and drawing once our plates were put away and we're looking forward to when Amélie will want to contribute to the artwork. We've also decided that any time we draw on it after dinner we're going to date it, take a picture, and in a year we'll compile a little picture book. Another fun little project. Oh, and the mismatched chairs...I'm working on that.

*During our after dinner conversation we started talking about words that are frequently misspelled. I've seen a lot of this as an English teacher! Congratulations, definitely, and Wednesday were the top three.

Well, my so-called summer filled with time to craft, sew, and take on new project was pretty much just in theory. I cannot believe it's been TWO months since I last wrote an entry on this blog! There was a lot going on around our place during the summer, but none of it (sadly, sort of) included house projects or crafts. Or maybe just a little bit. The biggest thing this summer...our baby girl Amélie, making her appearance two and half weeks earlier than expected!

We think she's perfect!

Of course now that she's here, I don't think that I'll be spending much time blogging here as I have much more important things to do such as stare at my baby, kiss her a million times a day, snuggle her, smell her sweet baby scent, and love her to pieces. My desire to work on new projects has definitely diminished and of course not having enough time to do them doesn't help either. I'm sure I'll come around to my crafting senses in time, but until then, I've got my hands full.

Officially Summer...

...because I have no more students and papers to grade! I last saw them on Friday of last week, but I still had to go in for training of our new textbook, ugh, and then some training on English language learner teaching strategies this week. Woo, the fun life of a teacher! Although I'm not prepared with lesson plans for next year, I'm really not concerned at all. I just cannot believe I have 5 months of vacation/baby bonding time starting today. I'm also happy to have been working with my sub, so I know she'll be working to prep for the beginning of the year. I still have one more work related meeting next week and probably some communicating with the sub, but I'm considering it SUMMER! With that said...I can finally begin little projects around the house. How about some beautiful images for inspiration now?! Yes, please!

I saw this...

and was instantly inspired. I love gallery walls a lot. I especially like gallery walls with unique frames and sizes. The cherry on top of the gallery wall in the image- the fabulous color. That color is just so soothing and I've been feeling like I perhaps need a little change in the living room. I can't believe I haven't made new pillows for the living in a months. That's definitely a record for me. I'm still in love with the accent fabric in the living room (see below), but maybe it's time for something lighter? I need to be inspired. Maybe a visit to Calico Corners is in order.

...these curtains from Urban Outfitters! If I only had $200 lying around so I could buy a pair. so sad. I would attempt to make them, but they just look like too much work for me right now. I also would need them to be 108 inches long. These are only 84 inches. Oh well.

They have them in a really pretty yellow, which are the ones I would love to have for the nursery. Maybe I can find them for less on the internet. You can find everything on the internet!

On my way home from work today, I stopped by PB to check out their sales and peek at their birdie stuff. They currently have a buttload of bird themed objects. Since I'm very much thinking and working on including some birds in the nursery, I couldn't resist.

I usually center my PB visit on the sale stuff because I'm frugal like that. What did I spot today?

These! I really like the mixing and the matching of frames on walls and these are just so unique. I want to have an earthy natural feel to the nursery and these are definitely earthy. But, here's where it gets good. I spotted them on one side of the store, checked out the price and decided they were not worth the price today. As I made my way around and picked up this...

pillow with the yellow, blue/grey, and coral colored bird (I'm thinking a pillow for the glider), and then stopped to look at other birdie things, I finally made my way to the register. What do I see as I'm standing in line to purchase my one goodie??!! The rustic 8x10 frames with mats for $9!! Apparently, since they lost the boxes for them, they marked them down from $39! Yeah, savings for me!! I found two, but I'm hoping to score one more at this price. They would look so cutie above the modern white crib!! So, if you happen to pop into your PB and spot an 8x10 rustic wood frame for $9; I would totally love it. Obviously, this won't do me any good if I have to pay an arm and a leg for shipping. So, hey Sacto crew...you seen any of these??? Love ya! =)

My New and Best Project...Ever!

I haven't worked on any new projects at home lately because I've been busy doing something else...

I've been exhausted and unfocused when it comes to house projects for the last three months. It's hard to do anything when our place doesn't need anything really done. Also, my mind is definitely elsewhere. I rather be focusing on a nursery! I am of course chronicling our pregnancy, but I've decided that this blog will still be mostly devoted to decor and craft projects. With that being said...I have a new blog! Just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! The hubby and I celebrated with my mom and family last night (which is traditional for Latinos). My mom always makes soo much food and so we had to eat lots. It's always special spending Holidays with our loved ones. Today, we rose much too early for me and assisted in the preparations of the Christmas meals provided to the homeless by our church. Although I was cold and tired, it was definitely worth it. The hubby woke me up by reminding me of the good Karma we would receive. In a few, we're off to what I know will be fantastic feast prepared by my fantabulous girl Kristin. We can't wait. Let the stuffing begin!

Thankful

I can't belive it's been a week since Thanksgiving. We had a wonderful weekend. My family came up (and down) to see us in the city and the hubby's brother flew in from Ohio. I got to see my brother's girlfriend's baby bump. Their little boy will be the first grandchild for my parents and I will get to be an aunt! I can't wait. We're so very excited to meet Corbin in March.

I slept in a lot, ate a moderate amount of turkey, consumed a lot of sugar, and enjoyed our beautiful sunny weather. We did a lot of touristy things since the hubby's brother was in town, but they were all things I would have liked to have done on any day off. We visited the SF Zoo, which I hadn't been too since I was a little girl. We walked the beach and picked up sand dollars. We saw the King Tut exhibit. We ate a lot of my favorite foods from childhood (since I grew up around SF) and enjoyed some new restaurants. It was overall a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. The hubby and I truly are blessed and very appreciative.

Now answer me this...Is that fabulous wall design something I can do on my own? Should I wait for the decor stencil kit on my Christmas list? Can I paint it in a lighter color than chocolate brown and get away with it in our SF rental (poop. I miss MY house)? I can just paint one wall before we move right, right? no biggie...hmmm...I wonder what the hubby would say. Possible? Oui o non?

There's this shop over on Valencia that I have recently fallen in love with. When the hubby and I first came upon this delightful place all he could say about it was that it was "Weird" and "Why would anyone want to buy stuff there?" A few days later he mentioned that he'd brought up this unusual shop with one of his coworkers and the hubby didn't get the reaction he was expecting because the guy apparently seemed offended. I guess I'm not alone in my weird shop love.

On my day off this week, I decided I had to visit. Now what could possibly be weird about this store? Let me just say that one of the first things you see when you enter is a mounted horse head with a horn added to it so as to make it appear to be a unicorn. Weird or interesting? Aside from that unique object, they have an amazing collection of taxidermy framed butterflies (I love!) and an amazing array of plants. My personal faves being the succulents. They have beautiful vintage botanical prints, amazing artwork, and random bits and pieces. There is soo much to look at and as my title states, lots of horns. Mounted animals galore as well as the unusual in the style of the unicorn.

While I was there I had to pick up another succulent and a lovely ceramic (orange) flower pot. As I was walking towards the register, I was stopped by a plant on a plaque. No dirt needed there. They had a detailed description on the plant and the care it requires. I instantly decided I needed one and now I'm on the waiting list for a small one (since they didn't have any in stock on Wednesday). Meet Staghorn Fern. Mr. Fern if you please.

I guess even the nursery part of the store couldn't avoid having horns. Based on my little research on the net, you can buy one not on a plaque and then mount it yourself. All you need is some moss, some kind of string/tie, and a plant. Easy as pie. You can find out exactly how here!

Yup. I've finally taken some pictures of a few things that have been getting done around this casita. One was Moe the sad chair from ages ago. I am this close to getting it done. The others are a pair of roman shades I made for the window in the area beside the kitchen.

First up, the roman blinds. I have to apologize for a lack of pictures throughout the process. I'd been pretty good about doing so, but for whatever reason, I didn't take any for this project. I believe it's because I was using Jenny's tutorial over at Little Green Notebook and didn't think it was necessary to take my own. Now, I realize that maybe I should have because I added a step or two. Anyhoo, here they are:

The work. Man. What a pain it was to remove what seemed like 126,286,636,364 staples and then putting ALL those staples back on it for the reupholstery. For most of that work I used my hard core business NOT electric staple gun. My hand hurt. A lot. Then, on a visit to my local little hardware store I spotted my savior. An electric staple gun...with a trigger...and lots of power...for $40!!! I guess I thought an electric staple gun would have been expensive, but I was wrong. It made the rest of the project a lot more pleasurable for my hands, but still not pleasing to the ears of the doggies and probably the people living in the upstairs flat. Oh well.

As far as putting it together, I basically worked in reverse. I found the supplies at an upholstery store in town and then did some research on the internet. I know it's not perfect, but it's good enough for me.

I'm overall very pleased with these two projects and of course the projects are neverending around here. I've got some faux roman blinds for the office I'm making tomorrow (yay, for Veterans!) using the fabric below. I again found a great deal on ebay; 5 yards for $25!

The office still needs a lot of work since it's been the hardest to organize, so I'm not including any bland photos. We're totally lacking in storage space and so it's been a struggle trying to find a place for all the hubby's music stuff and all of my craft supplies. It doesn't have any color in it, but I'm thinking a combo that works with orange is in the cards.

I am working on replacing the chairs in the living room with two of these:

So, what do you think? I'm leaning towards option 1 because the modern and relaxed shape as well as the pattern will prevent our living room from seeming too stuffy. But, option 5 really is a great shape. I mean, just look at that looker in this living room. It just really makes me want to get one like that.

The prices range from $150 to $370.00. I know, sorta a big range. Either way, I think these Tarjay options are great, especially with a 15% discount for purchases over $125, free shipping, and apparently an extra discount from the hubby's employer; they are worthy of all my pennies. I really love the Dolce chair I bought from Tarjay a few years ago. The doggies have loved it a lot too since they've worn in out. It's comfy and the right size for our place, so I'm guessing all of these will be around the same size.

Also, since our ceilings are all higher than the ones in our home in Petaluma things are feeling a little mini in the rooms. Any suggestions on how to "lift" our spaces? Affordable options for decorating the walls? I was thinking maybe some architectural object like a decorative door?

Okay, so I've literally just sat waiting to load all the pictures for an hour- an hour!! Ugh....this is part of the reason that I haven't been blogging since we moved. We're not able to get the same internet connection we had in P-town, so the internet connections basically sucks. Big time. It's on and off consistently. Annoying as heck!

Anyways, the above images are a little glimpse into what we originally started with when we were unpacked by the movers on the last day of moving. Crazy mess.

Seeing as I'm having some major troubles with the loading of the pictures and I need to get to bed some time today since I have to get up at the crack of dawn for the longest of longest work days...I will share them tomorrow. I'm sorry to leave you with the ugliest images ever. Just be happy it wasn't you stuck with this mess. =) oh yeah...these were after I'd already arranged some of the stuff. Also, did you notice I didn't include the office...it-was-BAD!

I had to return something to a store around the area I work in. As I was checking out, I asked the man at the register if he knew of a hardware around the area.

Now, in case you're wondering. The city I work in is literally the city I work in. I don't really spend any time hanging out there. I try and avoid situations where I might come face to face with my students outside of school. So, of course I literally go to work and home; unless I have to make a pit stop at the fabric store(s) or the mall.

This was his reply, "Oh, I know there's a Restoration Hardware right down the street." and I responded with, "No, a real hardware store." What a dummy!

We have a problem with a very long long hallway! It's typical for a lot of SF homes and ours is no exception. When I went looking for a runner at Tarjay, I could not find one long enough. The hubby suggested buying two runners and then just laying them close together, but it's just not going to cut it for me. Then, yesterday, I saw this...

It's been crazy! Work is busy. The home is currently a work in progress. I have been so disconnected from the blogworld. I'm at work right now, where I should be doing some lesson planning since I'm SO busy, but I needed to get this out there. I will be back...soon. I hope.

I've got lots of pictures. So far, we're loving living in SF. It is wonderful! We love our place and the location. We're not driving as much as we did in P-town, the doggy are loving the pet friendly environment, and we're having fun when we can. It's been all around a great change. Oh, and the hubby just loves his new job!

But, for now, I'd like to give you a little glimpse into one of our running stops.

City Living: Part 1

Back for an update on what's going on with the big move. So...we found a place! Not just any place, but a beautiful, fabulous neighborhood, I could live here forever kind of place. Well, maybe not forever, but definitely for a while. At least right now. =)

We're going to in a part of SF called Noe Valley. Almost right in the middle of the city; according to the map we've got. It's supposed to be one of the, if not THE sunniest place in the city. It's got nice wide streets, lots of cool restaurants and shops, and it's close to Golden Gate park; which, I have a feeling is going to become one of our favorite places to be, especially with the two doggies.

We got the keys on Saturday and took some pictures to help us figure out where to have the movers place our furniture (and of course so I could share here). While we were there we discovered a really great recreational center with tennis courts, an indoor basketball court, daycare, and a gated doggie park just two blocks from our place. We also found out our favorite grocery store is opening just a mile a way and just in time for our move, Wednesday! Also, the hubby's shuttle pick-up for work is only 4 blocks away! We cannot believe how fortunate we are! We're really excited (if you hadn't noticed my overuse of the exclamation point!).

We are just soo thrilled at the way things are going for us. Everything is falling into place almost effortlessly. We've been doing a lot of things on our side to make sure our transition to city living is going to go really well and we are almost there.

A Big Move

There's been a lot going on around the Johnson house. The school year has started and I've been extremely overwhelmed with my new classes. The hubby got a new job with a BIG company(it rhymes with snapple). I was gone in Tahoe for my fab friend K's bachelorette. I've also done lots of changes around the house, but really haven't had any time to take pictures. I'm just exhausted.

I've lost my steam with updating my blog on my house projects because....we're moving! I hate moving and I'm sad about having to rent our house. poop. But, we're very excited about things to come for us. With the company he'll be working for being in Cupertino and me having to still work in San Rafael, we've decided we're moving to San Francisco. Man...we're so not bumbed about that. We figured we're still young, have always talked about living in the city, and it's a good place for both of us to commute from. So, I haven't really been making too many changes in regards to the house itself, except for accessories (I made new linen drapes that I love!). The hubby is set to start his job in about three weeks, so we've already started prepping for the move. We haven't found a place yet, since he just accepted the offer on Thursday, but there are a few places we're interested in. I'm of course making sure it's a good base to work with since I won't be able to make any changes. =(

So, the next few weeks will more definitely be really crazy for us and the posting will probably be sparse. But, I will most definitely be posting pictures of our options and an upcoming visit from a blogging buddy! Hey Lindsay!!

Happy Birthday to Us!

Some of you know this, but the hubby and I have the same birthday, August 12th. Not the same year, but the same exact day. It really is fun getting to share your birthday with your best friend. We usually do something extra special since we only need to celebrate once a year. This year we went out to dinner at the Melting Pot; which, was fabulous. The location closest to us was formerly used as a kiln somewhere around 1890. They used to make bricks and so it's this winding underground cave thing with little booths and tables carved into the domed walls. Aside from the fun of fondue, the atmosphere added to the whole experience. It was perfect. They asked us if we were going to be celebrating anything that night and of course we told them it was our birthday. We love the response we get when people find out that, we, a married couple share the same birthday. We left stuffed and very content. I'll post pictures later when I can find the cable for the camera to the computer.

My Dream Green Home

Actually, I love our house. I wish it was a little bigger and then we'd never have to move. Moving is poop. But, when I saw these pictures I just fell it love.

Green is by far my most favorite color in the world. It's soothing and fun at the same time. I have plenty of green in our cozy cottage, but looking at those pictures makes me want to add MORE!

In case you haven't checked out the links over to the right there, Snippet & Ink is one of the prettiest and most inspirational websites for a bride-to-be (or a married lady like me). It's really just beautiful image after amazing image.

I read Kathryn's website every single day (and maybe multiple times a day) while planning our wedding. I don't know how she does it but she continues to come up with some of the most wonderful inspiration boards almost every single day.

I thought it would be fun to work with one of the inspirations boards at S&I as inspiration for a room. Although I love summer, I always get so excited as fall approaches. It's definitely my most favorite season of the year because of the color, the weather (hot, in our area) and cuddly clothes. It's also means the hubby and I will have been married for one whole year! yay!

Curtain Call

New Option?: How about this one? I loved this one when it first came out at PB. It's a great mix of a bunch of colors I love. Orange? Check. Yellow? Check. Blue? Check. Green? Large print? Check. hmmmm...

I am sooo happy to be back home. I did not like being away from home for two whole weeks. It could have been worse. I could have been stuck in some awful city in the middle of nowhere; at least I was in San Diego. The weather was fabulous; the conferences okay. There was no chance for me to blog or really do anything with my computer since I was staying at a wire less hotel. I had to go to the lobby and use one of their computers to get online. Lame-O.

I'm back and ready to get some final projects done before my school year actually begins.

First up, I want new curtain in the living room.

This is what I'm looking at right now. I don't have all of those exact things. Like our couch is not IKEA, I did not buy my curtains at RH, and my rug is not C&B...etc. But, that's basically what our living room looks like. Cute, but not very exciting at the moment.

I think bringing some color with the curtains if definitely going to make a big difference. For example, Nicole's curtains over at Making it Lovely. So lovely and fun.

Bold, huh? Why not? If I don't like it, I'm sure I can find a use for it another day. Or, there's always this one...

A.B. Primrose in Olive

What I like about the temple garland is that includes yellow and orange, which are colors that are present in other parts of the house and I love them. The kitchen includes yellow accents and since the living room shares a wall with the kitchen, I figured it would work the best. But, I love that primrose. I'm just not sure about those blue flowers in the pattern. We definitely have lots of blue in the house, but I'm trying to move away from too much of it. Oh, primrose is also about $5 more a yard, so....the frugal girl in me in saying "Go for the temple garland."

What to do? Any suggestions of colorful fabrics that include green, orange, yellow, white, brown, and/or blue?

Oh yeah, that rug...I'm not to sure about it anymore. I'm thinking about moving it to our bedroom upstairs.

I forgot to mention that I'm in San Diego for the next two weeks doing some serious teacher training. Yeah. poop. I'm not really excited about it, but it's definitely something that will help me plan for one of my new classes this year. So....I'll be trying to stop by to do some blogging although I really don't have any projects to share since I'm confined to a super boring hotel in the evenings. Just kidding.

Well, the session is about to start. I better act like I'm taking this seriously. =)

Sew Cool

Here's my latest update to the "doggie" chair. As you can see below in the first picture. The original chair in all it's glory. It actually looks really nice from far, up so close not to good because of those darn doggie nails that dig into the tweed. So sad. I completed the Target survey on the receipt because I wanna win $5000! Oh man, I could get 2 new dolce chairs with that moola. Actually, I could probably buy 400 of them! But, two would do.

I felt it was time for a white slipcover to match our couch. This is how it went down.

1. I laid the fabric on the chair for the middle section (the seat) and determined how far down I wanted it in front and back. I always leave a little extra, just in case.
2. I laid the chair flat on the fabric and cut out the shape of the side, again, leaving extra for the seam and just in case.
3. I turned the fabric inside out and pinned around the shape of the chair. This is the part you're going to sew together.

4. I put in on the chair. The second pictures shows what you can do if you want to hem it at that length. But I wanted to add a skirt to match our couch.

5. I added the piping and skirt. This was the most complicated step. I covered the piping in fabric. (so, my sewing machine came with a special foot that allows you to do this) Then I wrapped the fabric around the chair to guess about how much I would need. I went around and pinned it to the chair along with the piping while the slipcover was inside out. I added the pleat while doing this.

6.I sewed it all around and made sure the welting went under in the back. If you take a look you can see I started the skirt on the sides, not on the back. I used the fabric I had used for the seat part for the back part of the skirt.

7. Hem the skirt and you're set.

Maybe I'll make a video next time I do it because it's was hard to stop to take pictures while I was doing the skirt, so that's why they're missing. oops.

I heart latte bowls

That just totally did it for me a few years ago. At that moment I thought to myself, "I need a latte bowl collection, stat!" I don't remember what Martha Stewart issue it was, but that image has definitely stuck with me.

Not only are these adorable, cutie patootie, colorful bowls good for...yeah, lattes! mmmm... But, they work for keeping things a little bit more organized. I have one sitting on my nightstand because even though I have a beautiful jewelry box the hubby gave me, I just can't get that jewelry to put itself away. I just throw whatever I take off before bed in the little bowl. I've also used one to put keys in. Just set one on a ledge or table and you've got a fab key drop off zone.

Here's a few more ideas:

1. soap dish

2. cat/doggie food bowl

3. a grouping of bowls as a centerpiece

4. float a candle in one

5. cotton bowl holder on your bathroom counter

6. a vase

7. bobbypin/hair tie holder

Another great thing about latte bowls is that they're usually only a couple bucks each. You can snag a few and start a collection in a jiffy. Here's a quick look at part of my collection.

You can always find them at Anthropologie for $4 or $5. Whenever I happen to be around Anthro, I'll pop in and buy one. I've been working on creating an only greens, blues, browns, and yellows collection (sometimes I can't help myself when it comes to orange though) so in narrows down the ones I get and makes it harder to find more of a variety. But, I'm okay with it. It allows me to slowly accumulate my collection, which, the hubby likes. Latte bowls aren't exactly manly.

Know of any good places to pick up latte bowls? I think I need another...

Update: I've decided to keep the dark stain it currently has and place in it's rightful home and accessorize it. I'm loving the contrast of the white on the dark stain. I still can't decide on the painting or papering? help.

When I mentioned to the hubby two days ago that I wanted to buy a sideboard, all he heard was cyborg. His eyes widened like I'd said the magic word and I just stared back at him with surprise over the fact that he was actually excited about us getting another piece of furniture. That excitement lasted all of two seconds until I repeated what I'd said. "oh, really?" is all he had to say about that. =)

Before I could really go any further into the conversation about the sideboard, I asked him what exactly a cyborg is and the topic completely changed. I've been enlightened. I now know about the 6 Million Dollar Man. Do you? Interesting.

Anyhoo, I later gave him the info on why I HAD to have a sideboard and how much it was going to cost us. Lucky for him, he has a thrifty wife and the sideboard ended up being on Craigslist. He almost seemed interested about it. Well, I won and we now have a "new" piece of furniture in our little cottage and I LOVE it! I now actually have a place for our China and silver! woo. It set us back all of $80. I'm happy with that number.

Sorry, not enough sunlight this morning.

When the hubby got home last night I'd moved her in all by myself in the heat. He was impressed and then I posed the question that's kinda plaguing me. Should I paint her or let her be? As of now, I'm thinking of just cleaning her up, fixing up her rough spots, and then doing something with the inside of the cabinets and drawers. Maybe paint in a bright color (maybe the green on the living room walls) or finding a fancy wallpaper to line her in. I'm sorta leaning towards the paper.

So, for your viewing pleasure and consideration in my dilemma, some inspirational photos.

Pillow vs. Pillow

With the addition of a new white slipcover to the living room chair (I'll post that later), I decided it was necessary to create a new pillow cover because the old one (zebra print) wasn't working anymore. I was also inspired for the change by the fact that I bought a new pillow at Pottery Barn last week.

I wanted the green one below, The Jute Braid Pillow by PB to go with the new one I bought. But, at $40, I didn't think this solid print pillow was worth it. I figured I could try to make my own. Here was the challenge.

With an idea in mind I headed over to the fabric store to seek my materials. What did I come out with? Burlap and a green embroidered linen. What did I make? Check it:

Hey Burlap, nice to see you again.
I cut out enough to cover the piping stuff to go around the pillow.

Here it is all bundled up in burlap.

FYI: you're going to end up being covered in burlap threads

Here is my fabric measured and cut.

I inserted the burlap underneath the edges before I began to sew.

The result is this happy pillow with it's new PB friend.

Who do you think is the winner? I may be biased, but I kinda like mine better. =) Oh, total spent on materials: $5!

Light up your life

Here's a quickie DIY project to make a lamp out of anything with a whole in the top...umm...or a bottle. I found a great blue bottle at Marshall's for $5 and bought the lamp kit months ago for $7. I found an awesome lamp shade for $9 at Pottery Barn the other day and the light bulb went off in my head...make a lamp for the new guest room.

Here's the details:

Step 1: You can buy a lamp kit at a hardware store and it provides the directions about how to wire it. It's real easy. Mine came with little rubber stopper thingers you can use instead of the cork, but I prefer the cork because they're easy to find(They have them in a variety of sizes at OSH) and provide a better seal.
Step Two: Wrap tape around the cork to prevent it from falling apart and then drill a hole in the middle in order to insert the light socket.

Step Three: Find a jug or whatever you like and insert the cork with the light socket.

You can see my mallet hanging out in the background. That's how I got my cork down and snug in the bottle.

Part Five: Add your shade (and harp if needed) and find your new lamp a home.

Easy as pie and only $21. I think my quick and affordable project can be compared to those found in the pages of House Beautiful.

Yesterday I decided to hang up those IKEA floating shelves I mentioned I got for FREE in the new guest room, now that the bro is gone. I was lucky enough to snag two shelves, but I'm thinking I may need another one...or two. What do you think?

Note: the accessories were plopped up on the shelves, this is not the final look. =)

What was my reasoning for putting them far apart. I wish I could say I had some smart plan to put something in the middle, but I don't. I actually put them up in a hurry before leaving for my CPR class (Which I highly suggest everyone take. I know Maggie did! Yay!) last night and was lucky enough that they are actually level and evenly centered in the wall. I used our stud finder and I think that's where I thought they were. How do you like those stripes?! woo.

This is where I want your thoughts. Should I get another shelf to put in between those two? Or should I just leave it? I'm not sure if I want to add two more and put one below the lower one shown, too. I'm guessing the lower shelf is now at about a 4 and a half feet from the floor. Gotta love a little MJ.

No, no one has beat me up.

Remember the striped wall and blue fabric itty bitty guest room? Yeah, I didn't forget. Our visitor (my daddy) came and is now gone and it's time to share some pictures and dilemnas. So when I started I was all about the blue. I think it was because of this great fabric I found, but now I'm sure I'm really feeling it. I sorta feel like it doesn't really go with the other rooms in the house. It's a bit too rustic beachy instead of ecclectic beachy. Anyway...let me show you some details and then explain what's going to change.

Now: No natural light except for a teeny tiny sky light = bad pictures. sorry.

The blue here are what I'd originally decided on.

Later: I'm thinking BLACK!, white, tan, and some yellow.

Oh, and that black and white rug you see a corner of. Again, no natural light here = crappy picture.

I'm thinking of going for it. I already have the fabric and the rug and I can find some yellow accents somewhere. I found the Waverly fabrics at Joanns on sale (their home decor fabrics always seem to be 40 or 50% off), and the rug was $12 at IKEA. Also, see those ginormous fluffy down pillows on the table and futon up there (euro size!), aside from being found at Tuesday Morning's for $12, they also have them at IKEA for $9.99! Deal. I've been slowly working on quite a collection of these. I think I have an addiction for pillows. The hubby knows.

Now that the little brother has graduated, he's moved on to bigger and (hopefully) better things; at least according to him. There were plans made, but as a typically teenager, he's changed them. He will no longer to be going to Sac State as planned, but instead going to a JC and moving in with his best friend for a year before transferring to Sac next year. I'm okay with that, but I would have preferred he go now, oh well. What do I know as the adult?!

Seeing as he's moved on to other things, I felt his stinky teenager and rabbit smelling (he kept the rabbit and cage in the bedroom against our wishes) bedroom could use a change. I wish the camera would have been in working condition when I started the painting to show it step by step, but he's where it's at now.

Some accessories I'm thinking about including in the decor.

I really don't know what I was thinking when I decided I needed some major stripes in that room. Maybe I wanted something dramatic since the room has really high ceilings and I felt like I couldn't find any decor to fill in that space? Perhaps. Either way, it was a lot of work taping, painting, and then retouching, but I'm actually liking it a lot. Maybe I'm crazy. I recovered the DIY headboard with fabric I already had (and have lots of still). I actually didn't buy anything for this little makeover. All I bought was the 2 inch blue painter tape. You can definitely call this budget friendly. Oh wait, I did just buy that wicker elephant table at the thrift store last week. I couldn't resist. It's soo cutie. I think it fits and it'll definitely work in a baby room later on. I'm thinking ahead here.

I scored two white floating shelves from IKEA for free! from a colleague and am thinking of putting them up on the wall not seen here and then putting up some photos of our honeymoon and other beachy like things on 'em. There's also a white dresser from IKEA in that room that I'm going to buy knobs for. Remember, this is the fabric I'm working with in there. I'm taking out the orange and the turquoisey-blue out for the accents.

Seriously, my girls put this together. Along with a parent retreat, an overnight student retreat, this crash, and an assembly/"funeral" for the "walking dead" that were taken out of class the day of the crash to represent a life lost due to a drunk driving accident. This was a year long effort from 7 wonderful young ladies (my ASB EXC board) and myself.

Meet Moe

Moe's fallen on some bad times. I found him just hanging out at the local thrift shop just looking all sad and glum. He was asking for $15 to help him get home and maybe rid him of the blues (or should I say green and red plaid?!). I felt so bad, I couldn't just walk away. I decided to bring him home and help him get a new life. I hope the hubby will be okay with me bringing in a stranger!

A clean dark brown paint job on those legs (which I may completely change) and some crisp clean upholstery and I'm sure he'll be good as new. He might even have to change his name

Now, I only have to select some fabric....ugh, such a difficult task. I think I'll be needing some help.

I could just go with a nice white to match the couch. Maybe something like this:

I'm forcing myself to take a break at lunch. Take that, work!

I love tea. Seriously. It's been a lengthy love affair. The hubby knows about this. Although many people out there are coffee aficionados, I'm a true tea lover. One of the favorite things Oprah gave me years ago; a fabulous German tea pot and a gift certificate to Specialteas.com. I currently have about three teas in my rotation and the hubby and I enjoy a cup of tea almost every night before bed.

So, when I saw this delightful tea-inspired project I decided I'm going to have to make this some day. Maybe if I have a little girl it would be just adorable in her room. How about a tea party under the teacup light fixture? Too cute.

I have ONE week of school left and then the hubby and I are off on our honeymoon. As I type this, I should be working. Yup, work is kicking my butt and throwing me out with the trash. I told the hubby last night that I was going to blog since it's been FOREVER. Did I get around to it?...nope. I am too busy. I have so many little things that I've been working on around the house but pictures and details will have to wait. poop.

Every day next week is a short day since we get out at about 1, so perhaps I'll find some time to report on the projects, but, we'll see. This is how the schedule stands right now:

Monday: work till 3PM (7th period final), pack up classroom to move into the English hallway (finally!) and hopefully never have to move all my stuff ever again, probably be here till hmmm...6ish??

Tuesday: work till 1-ish, grade finals and projects, probably until 4. Go home and pick up dad from SFO...again.

Wednesday: work till 1-ish, grade finals, pick up graduation cake for brother, other brother coming into town-entertain.

Thursday: work till 1-ish, grade finals, prepare for graduation, reserve seats in the shade for family, graduation at 6PM, celebration dinner, staff end-of-the-school-year bash, chaperone senior grad night till 4AM! Yeah, 4AM!

Friday: be at work to clean-up, organize in new room, enter grades, get a clearance from the many people that need to sign forms, finally head home, family time, get ready to vacation.

Saturday: take brother to take placement tests in Sac (Steph, I hope la Chiquita is here by then!), make it to bridal shower for K, and pack...

umm...okay, so writing all this down is not making me feel better about how busy I am. Oh, and then there's the making dinner, cleaning the house, taking care of the doggies, and relaxing part of my day I left out. Yeah, blogging will have to wait. I'm going to try really hard to post at least pictures because seriously, I like to keep a journal of my projects.

It the mean time, I read this and felt compelled to pass it on. It explains the phenomena of Twilight as I would, if I had time.

A Feeble Attempt

I'm trying to get myself out of this endless work induced tunnel. Last night was the first evening I was home before 9PM. It was great. I have another rough week ahead of me; which, I am so ready to get over with. The culmination of my hard work will be getting to spend an entire evening in SF with colleagues, the hubby, and about 500 dancing teenagers until midnight. Although it's on the weekend and it's a work related event, I have to admit Sr. Ball is one of my favorite events. Oh, and daddy man is coming in from Guatemala on Thursday (while I'll be at a hotel with 30 or so teenagers!) for my brother's graduation in a few weeks.

I think I see the light.

The Little Things Blog

We actually have a futon thinger we bought to use for guests when we had lots of people staying at our house during our wedding weekend. Lately, I've kinda been feeling like it's just taking up space in the downstairs office and that it would look cute in something like this. Since this is literally how big and small (actually mine is a teeny bit smaller)my craft room is, minus the window on the wall (mines just the skylight). Isn't it cutie? Wouldn't it be the adorable little guest room? I think I have that paint!

There's a wall in our MBR I've been avoiding showing. It's been somewhat of a trouble wall for me because it's slanted due to our vaulted bedroom ceilings. So, I gave up and decided to work with the angle it's provided me with...kinda.

At first I thought, "Why don't I get some prints that go together well and frame them in exact frames in a very symmetrical design?" Then, I thought, "What if I just randomly place them on the wall?" since I love that look as well.

What happened is this:

I started out by deciding I wanted to have different finish frames because I love black frames, I wanted some bright whites to keep it airy, and the walnut matches our furniture. I prearranged them on the bed and once I thought it looked good, I started nailing and hanging. It actually didn't turn out how I first envisioned it, but I'm quite happy with the results. I couldn't have done it without my handy dandy little hanging tool. It's genius. So genius that one of my decor idols, Candace Olsen, uses it in her show! I bought mine at the now defunct, Linens n Things, but I've seen 'em around.

Excuse the mess in my craft room.

Anyhoo, I'm loving the mix of our pictures on the wall. I enjoyed an evening resting in bed with a dog at my feet, a decor magazine in hand, a new wall lamp shining on me, and good memories on the wall. It made me giddy. I can't wait to add some pictures to the wall after next month when the hubby and I will go on our long awaited honeymoon to Aruba! Oh, and if you look closely you can see my Disneyland silhouette or our silly "Love in the Material World" picture. I crack up every time I see it.

I forgot to mention I bought those frames at either Michael's or IKEA. I always make sure to check the internet for a Michael's coupon before I head out. Here's a 40% coupon for Michael's.

Cutie Baby Banner

Last week I posted about a mix of materials for the baby shower. Now that the shower is in the past, I can share what I used each of those things for.

The pink and red paper was used to create Tissue Paper Pom-Poms from Martha's site.

The polka dot fabric and the blue and yellow felt were used to create a baby name banner. This is the how-to:

1. I cut the fabric in 6 X 11 inch rectangles.2. I sewed seams on both long sides of the rectangle
3. I folded it in half and then folded in the edge to create a 5 X 5 square. 4. I sewed across one more time to create an opening to run the ribbon through 5. I outlined the felt letters by hand using an invisible ink pen. I bought mine at Joanns. Cut out the letters and glue to the square using fabric glue.
6. I added pink gross grain ribbon for the banner. There it is at the shower!

I'm really happy with the way it turned out, even though my ancient sewing machine kept giving me a hard time. I think I'm going to start browsing for a new machine.

Baby Celebration!

We had quite the little baby celebration on Saturday for my dear friend Stephanie and her almost-here little girl, Charlotte. We had the most perfect weather to enjoy yummy tea, treats, playing games, laughs, baby talk, and cake. I had a wonderful time playing the part of co-hostess along with Stephanie's neighbor, Peggy.

Friday Inspiration

I am a huge fan of round/pedestal dining room tables. I've actually never owned a square or rectangular one. Pedestal tables are perfect for sharing great conversations and for small spaces. We currently own one that I absolutely love. It's the perfect size and it expands to a nice size oval for holiday meals. We got the best deal on it through craigslist.

This weeks inspiration board started with a pedestal table as the centerpiece. I've actually been thinking of changing out some of our chairs for more traditional wood ones. I know my mom has a set just hanging out in her basement and with a little green paint (or white!) I could quickly whip up a totally different look. Maybe I'll have her bring them on Sunday??? =)

One Way or Another

I had a little bit of a shopping expedition today. Not so much for myself, but in preparation for the baby shower. There were a couple last minute things I still needed to pick up. I was mostly looking for prizes for the games, but of course, I couldn't resist taking a peek where I probably didn't need to enter. Really; how could I avoid not going into Ross?

If you're not familiar with this chain, the concept of the store is brand names at low prices. They purchase inventory from stores that perhaps have too much of one thing and then sell in for half the price. It's a random assortment of things, so it's not for those seeking a particular object at that moment. I guess it's like Home Goods. I wish I had one of those close by.

Anyways. I bought a few things; a cutie ikat patterned dress for $8(I'm thinking for Saturday), a pretty orange glass jar for $7, and two pillows, one at $6 and the other for $10 (both with a down fill). Now, I need some advice. I'm leaning one way, but I need the extra push to make the decision final.

I've got two contenders for the prize of being the new pillow on the giant chair in our bedroom. Here they are with their best fighting mugs on.

Pillow Number One: Mr. GP, graphic print...if you're nasty.

GP says, "Hey ladies, you see some rectangles in here? Nope, I've only got diamonds for you."

GP says, "Come and get up on this girls."

Pillow Number Two: Mr. HATE...AKA: Hot Around the Edges.

Mr. Hate says, "I'm the perfect mix of caliente and picante."

Mr. Hate says, "Ladies, I've got it all. Silk, hotness, and I'll full down there.
If you get what I'm sayin'."

I have to say, those boys are looking a little too brown for me in these pictures. This Brown girl really only likes White boys. So perhaps I don't want either. I do really like Mr. Hate because he's got that leafy pattern that compliments the euros on the bed and he's got some orange. I love me some orange. Or, I could do both?

This Saturday I'll be cohosting a baby shower tea party for my sweet friend. I'm looking forward to it because I'll get to see her, the baby bump in person, other friends, and do two of my favorite things...decorate and eat cake! I know she has some idea of what's coming (maybe from Peggy?), but I've got some surprises in store, for sure.

Retro Fab Chair Re-do

Here to show you the latest work on the retro fab chair. I had recovered the seat on the chair that I bought at the adorable "Good Stuff" thrift store. That wasn't enough for me. I wasn't feeling it. Then, I changed the seat fabric again. Sorry, no pictures of that state. This past weekend, the chair went through another transformation into what I am thinking is going to be it's final look. Although...I may change the seat fabric again later on. =)

Nice, clean, and white!

I've been totally feeling the white lately. It really just brightens up a space so much. It may have to do with spring and summer (I can't wait for you to really be here!) and the desire to brighten up any gloomy winter spaces.

A can and a half of spray lacquer (fancy), the removal and addition of lots of staples to the seat, and voila; a recycled mod chair! I was originally going to go with a mustardy yellow, but I saw this West Elm chair and changed my mind.

I'm trying to bring white back.

I Hate Reading!

Okay, not really. I have to say I am actually in love with reading. What would you expect from an English teacher?! I think I should maybe refine my reason for not "liking" it. Twilight. I know. I know how old I am, but hey, I work with teenagers. I at least waited a year or so to start reading it. I finished it last night...at 1AM!! On a school night!! Geez. I have been soo tired this week because of that dumb book.

I was bored at the beginning (because I already watched the movie) and thought the writing was mediocre. It's funny because I mentioned the fact that I thought it wasn't very good writing to some of my girls at school and they agreed. At least they can tell the distinction between good and bad writing. Aside from that, I was still enthralled in the plot. I think it was the ridiculously outrageous obsessive love that the two protagonists share for each other. It's just so fun to imagine such a romantic man. It also didn't hurt that I kept imagining this...

Oh. So.

Hot!

Really, can you disagree?

So anyways. Please excuse my lack of blogging. I am exhausted. It also doesn't help that kickboxing and weights have kicked my butt the last two days. I'll be back soon with some before and afters!

Faux Roman Shade

With my yards and yards of newly acquired fabric, my brain is working overtime to find creative sewing projects. Here's an easy one I thought of yesterday.

Please excuse the some of the blurry pictures. I don't know what is going on with my camera.

I started with fabric, muslin, and a piece of wood left over from the cabinet project.

I folded the fabric over twice to create a nice edge. I put the muslin down the middle in order to use it as a liner. I like to iron the edges to get nice folds and it helps with the sewing later on.

I folded all the pleats to create a faux roman shade effect.

Then, I sewed each pleat straight across making sure that it was covered by the fold hanging above it.

Finally, I made an opening at the top to slide the wooden piece through (fold fabric over and sew across).

I nailed it to the wall by rolling the extra fabric over the wooden piece and then nailing it to the wall underneath the curtain.

I'll have to add that picture to this when I get home today.

There you have it. Sound easy enough? Actually, making sure to have perfect folds was the hardest part. Add nails, a broken sewing machine needle (the last one!), a grouchy pms'ing girl, and you have a recipe for a breakdown and a fearful hubby.

Brighten Our Boudoir: Part 4

I'm at the point now where I'm not embarrassed to show the progress in our master bedroom. It's really coming together in the most perfect way. The color is still a bit more blue than I expected, but it's growing on me. The hubby even said he'd be okay with me painting it again if that made me happy (so sweet.). Well, it's still there. I figured it'd be better to wait and accessorize before changing the color again. It's not so much that I don't like it; it's just not the color I wanted.

As you can see, I finally received my fabric!! Seven point six glorious yards of it.

The clean (doggie fur free) duvet was 20 clams over at IKEA.

The crewel pillow is only temp. I'm making two smaller ones in the same crewel instead.

There's the super large chair. Those monogram pillows will also be replaced. I'm thinking a little zebra print. I'm also considering mirrors instead of the framed art.

My new lamps arrived today! I love them!

...or it could be that I just happen to be noticing every single preggers woman or newborn baby out there! I have a baby shower this Friday and next Saturday (yay for Mrs. B!) and there are like three teachers at school with babies on the way.

Whatever the reasons may be, babies and everything about them is just floating around. I really don't mind, especially when it comes to decorating adorable baby rooms. I saw these and just had to share. Who knows, maybe I'll be needing these for inspiration later on (okay, so a lot later on).

My thumbs and forefingers are killing me. What would you imagine I've been doing? Hmmm....playing the thumb cymbals perhaps? Or twisting knobs? Or...making buttons to create a beautifully tufted ottoman?!

As I sit on my couch with my feet resting on my coffee table turned coffee table + ottoman, I believe my achy fingers, thumbs and shoulder really appreciate the break. Man, I'm tired. Oh man, as I rested my head back on the couch, I can see two little spiderwebs hanging from the ceiling...ewww...excuse me while I rid my living room of these.

So, I accomplished what I envisioned. The hubby, as always, a little apprehensive and nervous about my endeavours into woodworking/home improvements is able to take a deep breath as everything turned out without any major breakdowns...from me. =)

As I mentioned in my previous post, I imaged creating a tufted ottoman-like top to replace the glass on my coffee table in order to cease the crazy foot-handling. That would be feet on the table.

Here were the steps that led to the amazing or at least interesting transformation.

Outline the shape of the table

Cut out the top with a jigsaw
I love that thing!

Sand the edges

Outline and cut out a piece that fits inside

Measure and mark where tufts will go

Spray with glue and cover with foam

Cover with a layer of batting and staple around the edges

Cover and staple with fabric

Add fabric covered buttons by threading through predrilled holes on the bottom. The hubby helped me with this by pushing the buttons all the way down into the foam as far as possible and I tied them on the bottom and secured them with buttons.

Paint the part that will fit inside the opening

Drill the bottom part onto the top. I used six screws around the edge.

Have a doggie sit on top just for fun

After all that work today; I think I deserve another day off.

When I ordered the lamps for our bedroom it said they were on back order until mid May. I was willing to wait since they were such a great deal.

Today, I received an email that they have been shipped! Woo, I wait can't to get them.

This week has felt incredibly long. Our schedule at work was all messed up because of the test we were administering. You'd think I would get to sit back and relax while they take the test, but instead I worked hard to catch up on my grading and prepare for a meeting. My brain hurts.

I thought I'd try something different this week for the inspiration board. I took one of the images from my Pretty post this week and I tried to re-create the room on a budget. I selected "Carrie's" remodeled room from the movie Sex and the City.

I tried to get as close as possible to the original room, but of course watched out for expensive items.

The Ubiquitous Ceramic Stool

You know you've seen it. Maybe you want one? Or you're favorite book is resting on one right this very moment.

They are everywhere and although I have thought about getting one many times, I'm not really sure if I want to commit to it anymore. They are pretty darn cute sometimes. They come in a myriad of colors and they fit into small spaces; which, my house is full of. Yet, I think I may be over it. Reason why? Those little stools don't come cheap. They start at around $40 and only go up. Yesterday, as I was scanning the random good at Costco, I came across this...

for $31.99. At first I jumped at the idea of getting one, but quickly decided I didn't want to join the crowd. I still think they are cutie, but it's just not going to work for me. It even teased me by coming in a lot of different colors: yellow, light blue, dark brown, sage green, and white. Hmmm...any one of those would fit with my decor. Geez, maybe I do want one.

Anyhoo, if you're looking for one of these, check out Costco for the lowest price I've seen around my parts.

Update: We went to Costco last night to pick up a pizza for dinner and they are almost gone (6 left). They had about 50 out the day before. Big ticket item!

Rest your feet on my...coffee table!?

We have a problem in our little cottage. People like to put their feet up on my table!!! Oh, and not just their feet; shoes and all! Ugh. What's happened to my poor coffee table (pictured below) is that there are spots where it's been scratched and man-handled. Aside from feet getting propped, the hubby thinks the table is a great place to have breakfast. Poop.

When I realized what was happening to my table, I decided I wasn't about to let it get worse. An ottoman seemed like the only answer. But, a new ottoman is expensive. Not good for this teacher's budget. I've been looking for a good deal, but have yet to find it.

While watching TV last night, the answer to my problem came in the form of David from "Color Splash." Yes, I watch the show. He used a table with an ottoman top that comes off to reveal a nice wooden coffee table. It resembled this one.

What I've got in mind is removing the glass on the top level of the my coffee table and then creating a tufted ottoman-like top to replace it. All I need it some plywood (that I will cut into the oval shape of the table), foam, batting, spray glue, some fabric covered buttons, and my handy staple gun. I'm planning on creating a plywood cutout that will fit in the open spot so that the top doesn't move. I think I even have some paint lying around that will match the rest of my table too. Woo. Now, I need to pick a fabric! I'm thinking microfiber (since it's easy to clean) in a neutral.

This sounds like a project I can tackle tonight. Maybe I'll have some pictures to share tomorrow! oh wait...I think I have a meeting after school.

Clean that Fridge!

I like to clean. No, I actually love to clean. You get results right away and everything is in it's place. But, I hate cleaning the fridge. The hubby's job is to clean the inside and I clean the outside. It's a team effort. I really got the best end of that one.

The hubby would not necessarily agree. He thinks the fridge should have pictures, mementos, magnets, and whatnot's all over it. Not me. I don't like clutter. I don't mind the random picture or note, but it drives me crazy when all kinds of things start to end up on the clean face of my refrigerator. I needed a solution.

Cork board to the rescue. One role of contact cork board (yes, it doesn't just come out of a wine bottle) from Tarjay and I was set to tackle this project. It literally took about 5 minutes. Unwrap the role, measure the space you'd like to cover, remove paper backing, and place your contact cork board in place. Voila. You're done!

Attach all random fridge accessories with small pins.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Pillow Talk: Part 2

In case you haven't noticed; I love pillows. Give me some fabric, I'll whip you up a puffy one in about 5 minutes. Accent or large euro size pre-made pillows are way too expensive for my taste. I rather buy myself some nice affordably priced down pillow inserts (they have great ones at IKEA) and them make a cover. My tastes are always changing and I like being able to change the color scheme quickly and without having to spend too much money. If you head over to your local home store, an accent pillow will cost you. How about at least $20 for a small 20 x 20? Poop on that.

I have a quick technique of making pillow covers. I take a piece of fabric large enough for my pillow insert, fold one end down a bit and sew across. Then, I fold the whole piece of fabric into thirds, making sure that the nice sewed end is under the un-sewn end. You want to make sure that when folded it is still the size you need to fit your pillow insert. Also, you're folding it so it's inside out. Finally, sew across the two open un-sewn ends. Flip it inside out and you've got a cover. You can slip your insert in easily and remove it whenever you like. Confusing? I wish I had pictures. Next time I'll try and remember.

On Sunday I decided to tackle something slightly different; a tufted pillow. I started with an plain old insert (not down), a LARGE needle, a button covering kit from Joanns, fabric, and elastic.

What I came up with was this:

I threaded the flat elastic ribbon through the large needle, added a large button to the end before I tied it off and then ran it through the entire pillow. It was sorta hard work because I had to have enough strength to hold the needle and push it through to the other side in the premarked and measured dot I had on the other side. Then, I had to add the other button and get the elastic as stretched as possible while holding the button and tying a knot at the same time in order to create the tuft. But, it worked and I love it. I can't wait to get my new fabric and the crewell fabric pillows made in order to complete the new bed look.
